Gays Attending Church – Come Out of the Closet

I realize coming out is risky. Jobs could be lost, family ties broken, friendships ruined, not to mention violence. So I am NOT suggesting a gay person come out of the closet if he/she is not ready to put themselves in harms way. That being said, gay people who regularly attend mainline churches and who can and want to help the cause of total equality should stop hiding their sexuality and come out to their church, peacefully and with confidence.
A study asked the question, “What changes the opinions of others towards gay people in a positive way?” The answer was “Visibility and knowing us.” As long as we gays continue to hide WHO we are, especially within the church, we perpetuate the belief that there is something wrong with us; something to fear. Further, it reinforces the Christian belief that homosexuality is a sin.
Risky, yes, but absolutely necessary for peace and harmony to grow. Don’t you want to get rid of the labels? GLBTIS (gay, lesbian, bi, transgender, intersexed and straight). Who cares?? We are all God’s children, made in His image whatever our sexual orientation. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” WHOEVER BELIEVES! Could it be said any simpler? Help the church understand this by the Christian life you live as an openly gay person.
