Jesus and Gay Marriage

July 21, 2010

Matthew 19: 3-9 “Pharisees came to him (Jesus) and tested him by asking ‘Is it lawful to divorce one’s wife for any cause?’ He (Jesus) answered, ‘Have you not read that he who made them from the beginning made them male and female and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife and the two shall become one? So they are no longer two but one. What God has joined together, let no man put asunder.’ They said to him, ‘Why then did Moses command one to give a certificate of divorce and to put her away?’ He said to them ‘For your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for unchastity and marries another, commits adultery.’

There are some who quote this passage as more evidence that homosexuality is against God’s Will because Jesus said it, countering those who state that Jesus never said a word about homosexuality. As I have said before, Adam & Eve were created heterosexual; otherwise, procreation would be impossible. What anti-gays are missing in this passage is that Jesus is not addressing sexual orientation. Jesus is preoccupied with the deviation of divorce as a response to the Pharisees who were testing him. Jesus is adamant about divorce; it is NOT allowed with the exception of unchastity (i.e. adultery). The very fact of Jesus’ stern response concerning divorce begs the question, “Why is there no stern comment, from Jesus, on same gender sex?” Answer: because the same rules applies to gay couples. Jesus was aware of same gender, loving unions; however, the people of Bible days were not. Lifetime love, commitment and faithfulness in marriage was the issue, not sexual orientation.
